Superstar - Live Show #1

Us Fairies enter this 'Superstar' process with some trepidation. There's no point going over the fact that we think the bestest ever JCS is the one we've already seen (yes, yes, we know, it's Drew Sarich, yada yada. but he is THE GREATEST...) and are slightly jaded by the entire 'voting for someone for musical theatre on telly' ethos. Saying that, we are determined to enjoy the process and do a bit of theatre boy spotting as we go along!! How bad can it be??

The first few programmes showing the auditions were an eye opener. Again, this might sound like a wee bit of bias, but we can't help but think that an awful lot of clever editing trickery is responsible for some very strong candidates looking rather less than strong. A good example of that was Rob Fowler, whom we saw in Vienna, playing Simon. Brilliantly, we hasten to add. A really good, strong, gravelly, emotional rock voice. Yet the little squeak we heard of him during auditions would have you believe he only ever sang in the shower, badly.

The less we say about Jonathan Ansell, the better. Little man, big ego. Just saying. Or a bit of the aforementioned clever editing.

So 11 young men roared and rocked their way to the live shows with varying degrees of success! As this is being typed as the show is running, please excuse the typo's and grammatical errors...

Judges; Mel C - patronising, cloying, eager to please and what does she know???  Zig a zig ahh??? Jason Donovan - I'm sure he's a nice man but what does HE know either? He was Joseph!! End of. Dawn French - at least she's funny (ish)... Seemes more interested in trousers and  their contents and such things  rather than voices, mind you. Bloody Amanda Holden...don't get me started. Seriously, don't.

David - nice looking boy but is he Jesus? A bit pitchy in places I thought...wouldn't look out of place in Jersey Boys...

Dirk from Scotland - Dirk! What a great name! Looks a little like a young Leo Di Caprio. Singing a ballad...nice tone to his voice but having heard the best of the best of the best he won't convince me until I hear him belt out a proper rock song. But was Jesus really Jack from Titanic...? Naaaah, not convinced yet...

Nathan - aka Thor. Personally I think he could be a contender if he didn't come across as so arrogant. I know he's confident but it's a thin line between being self assured and being a bit of a t**t. Singing 'Sign your name' which is something of a favourite. Is he vulnerable enough to play the King of Kings...?

Ben from Sunderland - another one who doesn't quite do it for me looks-wise. And his voice sounds a bit thin and reedy...my least favourite so far. Looks like Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory!! And Oi Audience!!! Don't boo ALW just because he picks up on something important!!!

Niall - initial instinct is he's too smiley to be Jesus...and looks a bit Lee Meady and I could never see him in the role; then dark curls do that I suppose. Oh!! No curls!! Good move. Looks better. Vocally: pretty. Now he looks a bit like Glenn Whatsisface (Carter! That's the one...) who played Jesus in the last re-run. It's the teeth!!!

Tim - reminds me of Sunday Valjean (private fairy joke). Tim isn't a natural musical theatre performer and someone you would see more as a character actor. And I suppose there's nothing to say that Jesus wasn't a well built young man. His singing is OK, his falsetto is the best I've heard on the show so far...

Roger - very soulful. Looks waaaaay younger than his years! Not a natural choice for Jesus but vocally he could probably pull it off. But a rock voice...? Not sure. I think his voice is great, but not necessarily for JCS...

John - very clean shaven, if you get my drift. In a 'I wax everywhere' kind of way. I like a rugged Jesus. And is he having pitching problems...? Oh dear. He moves like a cabaret dancer. Not a natural rock star. Though Lord Lloyd-Webber seems to love him. Hmm.

Afnan - love his family! And he has a good voice, if a little weak... But is he maybe a little too self aware...? He is a bit like a lovable puppy. Not the first description I think of when describing Jesus...

Jeff from Ulster - lovely looking boy. Lovely eyes. Odd song choice... Not sure if it showcases his voice to it's best...though he does have a delightful, slightly gravelly quality to his voice which I luuuurve. I do believe he is one of my favourites so far! Nay, he IS my favourite!! Bless him.

Rory - from the Wirral. I know the Wirral well!! At last a proper rock song...I wasn't expecting to like him but he seems to be doing well. Not bad...not bad at all. Though he does pull the occasional 'rock-face' which is always a no-no.

And so we wait until tomorrow to find out who's going and who's staying...
